Spain newsletter February: hiking on the coast and in Majorca

Of course, the Spanish Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands are perfect destinations for a relaxing and absolutely stress-free vacation. But how about wearing mountain boots instead of a bathing suit? The Costa Blanca and Mallorca, in particular, offer many excellent hiking areas. Excursions in Spain are possible even at heights of over 1000 meters.

Valencia is the most mountainous region in Europe after the Alps (!), about 2,500 km of marked hiking trails await visitors.

Spring, between February and May, is the best season to discover the Costa Blanca or Mallorca, far from the beaches, during a hike. This is when nature shows us its most beautiful variety of colors and offers unforgettable experiences.

One of the most impressive routes goes through the gorge of Rio Serpis. Although the hike is quite long, it has a relatively flat terrain and passes through beautiful gorges, directly on the banks of the river. Flower lovers and bird watchers will be amazed by this route.

A classic is the circumnavigation of the Sierra de Bernia with the crossing of a rocky tunnel at the end. The tunnel is about 30 meters long and only one meter high at the lowest point. You don't need a torch, you can always still see the exit. The view that follows is spectacular, a lodge above the Mediterranean Sea!

The Montgo route, between Denia and Javea, is also worth a visit: the varied circular route passes through the national park with its particularly rich flora and fauna and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys.

For more experienced hikers, the route around Puig Campana is the one to go: It goes around the big mountain and offers beside rugged rock walls, bizarre stone formations and waterfalls to dense deciduous forests.

Of course, there are many other routes on the Costa Blanca. Here are a few websites about it:

Majorca also offers much more than just the beach and the sea. Almost the entire west of the island offers sites for dream excursions. The mountain range, the Serra de Tramuntana, which rises to almost 1500 meters (Puig Major), is a place of choice for hikers.

Those who take the time to explore Mallorca on foot will discover the island from a totally new perspective. They will witness the interaction between sea and mountain, flora and fauna, land and people and will get to know thousand-year-old valleys and mountain villages where time seems to have stood still.

Majorca's first long-distance hiking trail, the dry stone route, called "Ruta de pedra en sec" by the Mallorcans, is mentioned here as one of the many highlights for active nature-loving vacationers. Here a few links for more idées of kicking trail:
