Spain-Infos February: Bad weather versus good music!

Believe me, this isn't meant to make you envious ....But it's true (and you may have noticed): we had an exceptionally warm January in Spain (with record temperatures in some places) and February also offers us temperatures of over 20 degrees. It may not be time for a swim yet (at least not at the moment), but right now it feels like spring, and sometimes even summer. The almonds are blooming, nature is waking up and we're happy.

As I know that many of you are not experiencing the same situation in your region, here's a little "comfort" today to combat the winter blues.

So, feel like a Spaniard in summer and enjoy the "cheerful music" of the south. Here's a wide variety of songs, handpicked just for you by me, a former radio host.

Let's start with a few familiar artists:

Shakira: Ciega sormuda

One of Shakira's best-known early songs (it was the first single from her 1998 album Dónde están los Ladrones "Where are the thieves?"), this is a discourse on the disorienting power of a love that paralyzes reason and the nagging fear of losing oneself entirely to the other!

Marc Anthony: Vivir mi vida

Before we move on to Spanish, here's another classic from the Puerto Rican singer with the English-sounding name. A well-known pop song that's still very popular in Spain, simply because it's a hymn to joy and resilience in the face of life's adversities.

El Sueno de Morfeo: Nunca volverá

Popular Spanish band from Asturias, especially in the early 2000s. Singer Raquel de Rosario was married for many years to Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso. Entered the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest to represent Spain, but only came second-to-last with "Contigo hasta el final"). "Nunca volverá" explores the idea of someone who has been cheated on and feels betrayed by someone they loved.

Demarco: La Isla de Amor

After experiencing the dramatic version of love (indeed, Spaniards love drama!), here's a bit of the ideal world again: Jamaican singer Demarco presents a romantic and passionate tale centered on the concept of love.

Amaral: Como hablar

The singer is Eva Amaral, originally from Zaragoza, and the band bears her name. Her album "Pajáros de la Cabeza" (which translates as "birds in the head") was the best-selling album in Spain in 2005. Here's a clip from 2000. It was the band's first single and explores the complex emotions and struggles associated with love and desire. The song delves into the difficulty of expressing oneself when someone takes control of every aspect of one's mind and heart.

Chayanne: Bailando bachata

Back to South America - but let's stick to the most popular Spanish dance: the bachata. A song by Puerto Rican Chayanne from last year that's sure to get you moving.

Pablo Alborán: El beso

The singer, born in Malaga in 1989, loves melodrama (a musical style that places him in the same line as his many compatriots). "El beso" depicts a deep and intense love felt for someone, and that the distance between them can be a barrier, comparing it to the separation of continents by seas. This type of song doesn't really suit my musical tastes, but then, there's something for everyone.

Veintiuno: La Toscana

Speaking of different tastes: in recent years, Spanish tastes have also changed. People no longer go on vacation only in their own country (where it's known to be the most beautiful), but also in foreign countries, sometimes even far away (friends of mine were recently in Gambia!!). Here, Veintiuno sings about vacations in Tuscany in a very popular radio hit. Overall, "Tuscany" encapsulates a desire for emotion, adventure and a departure from the ordinary. It reflects the desire to break away from social constraints, seeking refuge in an idealized version of life where imperfections and chaos create lasting memories. The song celebrates the idea of appreciating experiences, even if they're not perfect, as long as they're meaningful and memorable.

Vicco: Nochentera

Need a reminder? Here's the most unusual phenomenon of the last 12 months, even for a former radio presenter like me. You know the phenomenon: a song becomes a hit and all the stations play it over and over again. After three months, you can't listen to it any more. This Vicco hit has been played everywhere and all the time since last March. Nobody seems to be able to stand it any more (including me), it's REALLY crazy. Rejected during the pre-selections for the Eurovision Song Contest for Spain  (in February 2023 in Benidorm) and then promoted to the rank of giant hit with the double pun of a "Nochentera / Noche ochentera" - "Nochentera", talks about enjoying the moment and enjoying the night as it is. It's also a song that celebrates the music and lifestyle of the eighties. On a Saturday night, neon lights and glitter invite you to party with good music. The song also tells us to enjoy the simple things, like dancing and spending time with the people we love.

If you've made it this far, congratulations! Feel free to drop me a line and tell me what your favorite song is .
